— KNOW YOURSELF —

A HEADACHE THAT WON'T LEAVE.
Imagine headaches. Not once — most days, for years.
You take something for the pain. It helps. But living on pills has its own cost.
And a quieter thought creeps in: maybe this is just me. Maybe I simply don't cope.
every day
A symptom, treated forever. A cause, never named.
THEN SOMEONE ACTUALLY LOOKS.
An optometrist checks your eyes. One is slightly off — a little nearsighted.
All day, unnoticed, your eyes and brain strain to correct it. Overtime, every waking hour.
The headaches were never weakness. They were a root cause no one had measured.
the brain, working overtime — all day, unseen
Nothing about you was broken. Something about you was simply unadjusted.
A ROOT CAUSE GIVES YOU OPTIONS.
Now there is a choice. Borrow a pair of glasses. Do the headaches lift? They do.
So now you decide: glasses, contacts, surgery — or just knowing, and spending your eyes wisely.
Read now, rest later. Brace for the long screen. Small moves, made on purpose.
You are no longer at the mercy of pills and their side effects.
And you were never "difficult" — you were in quiet pain no one had located.
Knowing the cause is what hands you the wheel.
NOW SWAP "EYES" FOR "BRAIN."
If you suspect you might be autistic, the shape is the same.
Finding out is the kindest thing you can do — for yourself, and only for yourself.
Not a label to wear. Your own
specifications.
With them you can read the next hour:
this room will drain me — brace, or step out. That noise will cost me — leave early.
Small, conscious moves you could never make blind.
Without your specs, you're just taking pills for a headache no one will name.
"BUT THEN THEY'LL KNOW."
"But if I get tested, it goes on a file —
and then other people will know too."
True. So separate the two acts.
Knowing yourself and telling the world are not the same thing.
You can find out privately — the knowing is yours
long before it is ever anyone's record.
A file is a disclosure. Self-knowledge is a possession —
and you may keep the one without ever giving the other.
Te nosce — know yourself.
First. And for no one but you.
"BUT WON'T KNOWING CHANGE WHO I AM?"

The last fear: that understanding your own
wiring turns you into someone else. It doesn't.
Rachmaninoff fell into a deep
depression after the public failure
of his First Symphony — unable to
compose at all. He was treated,
quietly, by a doctor named Dahl,
and then wrote his Second Piano
Concerto — and dedicated it to him.
The treatment came first — and what followed is among the most
beautiful music ever written for the piano. It gave the artist back.
Knowing yourself does not make you less yourself.
It lets you finally be all of it.
AND THEN — THE FREEDOM.
The ones who couldn't fully be themselves still gave us beauty.
Imagine what they would have given — free.
This is what knowing yourself finally gives you:
you stop needing everyone else's approval. You need only your own.
Rejection from those you love still hurts — that never fully leaves.
But from everyone else it simply rolls off; you move past it easily.
Where you hoped for more, it disappoints. That is all — then you move on.
To know yourself is to be free to love yourself as you are —
and that freedom is the whole of it.
ALONE IN THIS — NOT ALONE EVERYWHERE.
You can't please everyone. And if everyone here puts you down,
that doesn't make you wrong — only alone in this. Not alone everywhere.
Simon and Hamilton studied this, within social identity theory:
the elite, secure in the group, grow overconfident; the minority, denied that ease,
must know themselves — what Du Bois called double consciousness. The price is belonging.
And you cannot excel without growing lonelier — those who meet you misread you as before;
success only warms the verdict, toward someone they still do not know.
Recognition is not the same as being known.
And the knowing — that part is only ever yours.
Recognition is not being known. The knowing is only ever yours.
