Stupidity

AUGHTY
Two thinkers, two theories of stupidity.
A German theologian and an Italian economic historian.
They explain different parts of the same problem.
Together they describe what happens after the request is filed —
and why arguing with the response does not work.
BONHOEFFER. THE SPELL.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
1906 — 1945 · theologian
He wrote about stupidity from a Nazi prison cell.
He was hanged there in 1945. The text survived.
His claim: stupidity is not a defect of the intellect.
It is a moral surrender.
"Against stupidity we are defenseless. Neither protests nor force can
touch it; reasons fall on deaf ears." — Bonhoeffer
It is induced by collective pressure. The institution casts the spell.
Individuals, otherwise reasonable, surrender their independent judgment.
They are no longer reachable by argument because they are no longer using it.
The cure, Bonhoeffer says, is not better arguments. It is liberation from the spell.
CIPOLLA. THE DIAGRAM.
Carlo Cipolla. Italian economic historian. 1976.
Five basic laws of human stupidity. The fifth is the worst:
"A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person."
More dangerous than a thug. More dangerous than a fool.
The diagram explains why:
gain to self
loss to self
→ gain to others
loss to others ←
Bandit
harms others
helps self
Intelligent
helps self
helps others
Stupid
harms others
harms self
Helpless
helps others

Aughty, by default
institution, often
?
A
bandit
harms you on purpose, for gain.
Their aim is legible. You can defend.
A
stupid
actor harms you for no gain.
No incentive. No deal. No threat.
They cost everyone, themselves included.
The most dangerous type of person.
Cipolla's fourth law: non-stupid people
always underestimate stupid actors.
PUT THE TWO TOGETHER.
Cipolla names the quadrant. Bonhoeffer explains the texture.
An institution running on aalglatt is the
stupid
quadrant at scale:
— it harms the autistic employee (loss to others),
— it walks away from the advantage it was paying for (loss to self),
— and the actors inside it cannot be argued out of the position.
The autistic employee, by default, sits in the
helpless
quadrant.
Trust is extended. Effort is given. The cognition does not pre-filter for malice.
The damage that follows is the predicted output of the diagram.
It is not a personal failure. It is what the quadrant produces.
Both theories were demonstrated to me — in real time — by the actors performing them.
They did not know they were proving the literature.
Bonhoeffer told me what kind of damage. Cipolla told me where in the picture.
Arguing with stupidity wastes the time of the one being damaged.
Recognising the quadrant takes the personal sting out of the loss.
The stupid actor is not after me. They are not after anything.
That is the part of the diagnosis that lets me hop wider.
A bandit you can defend against. A stupid actor you can only leave behind.
