AUGHTY
Steve Jobs called the computer a bicycle for the mind.
An amplifier. It lets us cover more ground than our legs ever could.
Everyone nods. It is a lovely line.
I think he walked straight past the more important one.
THE THING HE MISSED
The deepest gift the computer gave us is not speed.
It is Cmd-Z. Undo.
The power to return to an identical prior state and try again.
That is reproducibility — and reproducibility is the very thing
whose absence keeps medicine from being a hard natural science.
You can never run the same patient twice.
AUGHTY
Inside the machine, every act becomes repeatable.
Change one thing, hold the rest, observe. The same setup,
the same result. The computer handed daily life — and science —
the rewind that physical reality has always refused us.
BUT
Undo is so instant, so frictionless,
that it makes the obstacle too cheap to care about.
And in erasing the mistake, it erases the journey —
the effort, the moment, the thought you had while making it.
It does not just reverse the change. It deletes the time you spent.
MY WIFE'S CLINIC. THE FLOOR I LAID.
AUGHTY
I walk through it and every surface hands the day back to me —
what I felt laying it, the thought I had then
that turned out worth keeping.
The effort pressed the moment into the world,
so the world could return it to me later.
The things that made me are the ones I could never take back.
No Cmd-Z. No clean outcome. Just the journey, kept.
A floor you could undo with Cmd-Z would just be a floor.
The linoleum went down in one cut. It had to.
That is why, every time I cross it, it gives me back the day.
